Economists have strongly warned the East African  (EAC) member states against fronting selfish and national interests as this will continue failing the

Integration process and attainment of the sustainable development goals.

During his presentation at the EAC Working for Sustainable Development’ meeting held on February 22ndat Munyonyo country Hotel in the capital Kampala, Dr. Isaac Shinyekwa the head of trade and RegionalIntegration department at EcomonicPolicy Research Center (EPRC) says many challenges are lying ahead of theprocess warning that if not expeditiously handled by the heads of state,then regional integration will be far from a reality.

He further warns member states on signing Economic Partnerships Agreements.(EPAS) saying they will expose theregion’s economy to the developed economies hence continued importation.

The executive director, SEATINI-Uganda, Jane Nalunga on the other hand suggested that as heads of state hold talks in the ongoing heads of  State summit  atMunyonyoCountry Hotel in Kampala, they should  devise  better ways of  fostering  balance of tradeamong the EAC member states and also tasked  locals to embrace  theavailable opportunities if they are to realize transformation both social, economic and political.

Meanwhile, the former EAC legislative representative, Hon. Mike Sebalu wants respective member states to stop fronting nationalistic ideas anddropping decisions taken at regional meetings.

Uganda is currently hosting the regional heads of state summit   health, financing as some of the pertinent issues being discussed.
